By 2026, the Bicol Medical Center will have 14 Specialty Centers, one of which is the Geriatric Center. The hospital management has targeted that said center will be set up by 2024. And as an initial step, BMC launches its Geriatric Clinic today, May 26, 2022, in the Outpatient Department.
Dr. Clarin Rada-Llenarezas, the head of the Geriatric Center, explained how the Geriatric Clinic would help its potential patients.
"Pag punta ng patients, they will be triaged accordingly. Very complex ang dynamics of aging, so we need to give services that are needed by the special population — 60 years old and above with geriatric syndromes like those who have Urinary Incontinence, Dementia, functional decline, or those who require home care or long-term chronic care." Dr. Llenareza said.
BMC's Medical Center Chief II, Dr. Ronnie Gregorio Gigantone III, graced the event to express management's support for the Geriatric Center's direction.
"One of the goals of the Geriatric Center is to develop a Geriatric ward that would cater to geriatric patients...Mayroon po tayong program for that [Geriatric Center], first to have the consultants beef up the team of Doctors to handle geriatric patients and hopefully, magkakaroon po tayo ng sariling department ng sub-specialty ng Geriatric Medicine. We are encouraging [medical] residents to pursue further training in Geriatrics. We will send them to other hospitals with an accredited training program. After their graduation, they will return to us to fully develop our Geriatric Center." Dr. Gigantone said.
To avail of the services of the newly-opened Geriatric Clinic, you may have your consultation at the BMC OutPatient Department Building every Thursday morning.
